Description
Gardening is an extremely therapeutic and rewarding pursuit. Even though the area available to the average gardener grows ever smaller, it is still possible to create stylish effects and produce an impression of length and space in an infinite variety of ways. With the additional use of containers, a hugely versatile form of gardening, you can extend the scope of your garden and make the most of even the smallest patch of ground.

When working with a limited area, it is important to get your design just right. The first part of this wide-ranging manual looks at a number of different designs, as well as the difficulties you are likely to encounter and ways of overcoming them. It includes lessons on how to take measurement and draw plans accurately, with ideas for all types of gardens including patios, front gardens and basements. There are details of how to put your plans into action, with step-by-step instructions on constructing essential garden features such as walls, lawns and fences.

After the garden is laid out, you can add an array of finishing touches to make it truly yours. The second part of this book presents over 150 container projects, and shows the wonderful results of their application. It covers basics such as preparing your container for planting, selecting plants to suit the location, and maintaining your new garden. It also gives advice on your choice of containers, from hanging baskets and window boxes to terracotta pots, stone troughs and more. The projects have been created and grouped thematically under various colour, seasonal and scented themes. Designed to cater to all tastes, they include special sections on edible, inspirational and indoor collections. For budding green fingers, there is a section full of fun projects for children.

Once the essential groundwork has been laid, an invaluable chapter on choosing plants shows how to create, plant and maintain those all-important beds and borders. There is advice on selecting the best plants for every situation: for form, for colour and texture, for sun and shade, and for difficult soils.

Featuring more than 2000 evocative photographs, clear advice and inspirational step-by-step projects, this comprehensive and practical guide is for anyone wishing to transform even the smallest corner with flair and confidence.
